This week we will make the first granny Square for the CAL. This square is a solid granny square. I choose to make this square in a single color. We will need 16 squares total. Since I am doing this bag in two different colors I have chosen to make eight squares in the main color (MC) & eight squares in the contrasting color. This is a simple square yet is made with minimal holes.

Now I made my squares, for the front & back in single-color squares. In no way is that the only way to do it. You can do these in each a different color, each one with multiple colors in the square, or one color for all 16 squares. The only limit is how many colors you want to use.

Materials

• Worsted Weight yarn
• Crochet Hook size G or H
• Scissors
• Stitch marker (4)
• Blunt needle

Pattern:

Round 1: make a magic circle. Ch3,dc in magic circle, Ch 1, (3dc, ch 1 in magic circle) 2 times. dc one more time in magic circle. Join with sl st at the top of the beginning chain. You should have a total of 12 stitches (4 groups of 3 dc) and 4 ch-1 spaces.

Round 2: sl st into the next ch 1 space, ch 2, dc, ch 1,2dc in the ch 1 space, dc in each stitch till you reach the next ch 1 space, (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc in next chain 1 space, dc in each stit .ch until you reach the next chain 1 space) 3 times, join with sl st at the top of beginning ch. You should have a total of 28 dc & 4 Ch 1 space.

Round 3: Sl st into the next ch 1 space, ch 2, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc), in next chain 1 space, dc in each stitch until you reach the next chain 1 space (2dc, ch1, 2 dc in ch 1 sp, dc in each stitch until you reach the next ch1 space) 3 times. Join with slip st to top of beginning chain. You should have a total of 44 dc & 4 chain 1 spaces.

Round 4: ch 2, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, in next chain 1 space, dc in each stitch until you reach the next chain 1 space. Should have 11 dc.) 4 times. Join with 51St to top of beginning chain. You should have a total of 60 dc & 4 chain 1 spaces.

Finish off & weave in the ends.

How many?:

Now you will be making 16 squares for the front & back of the bag You can make all 16 squares in one color, do like I did & make half in one color then
half in another color. The handles & sides of the bag will also be a mix of the two.

That is it for this week. I do not expect you to finish all 16 squares in a week. You will have all the time you want to complete this. I love this about video learning.
